Kenton County Fair holds lawn mower demolition derby

News Article Photo A demolition derby for lawn mowers?

Demolition derbies are a big draw in places like Independence, Kentucky, which just held its first ever lawn mower demolition derby at the Kenton County Fair.

The derby pitted eight drivers on riding mowers crashing into each other until only one rising mower still runs. The riders wear protective gear, according to the head of Top Dog Promotions, which put on the derby, WLWT.com reported.

Lawn mower aficionados have found other strange ways to pit the power of their riding mowers against others, such as lawn mower drag racing.

The United States Lawn Mower Racing Association (USLMRA) hosts a nation-wide series of mower races throughout the year featuring riding lawn mowers with cutting blades removed that race at speeds from 5-60 mph.

This year's annual STA-BIL Keeps Gas Fresh Finals and Challenge of Champions, Labor Day Weekend, takes place in Delaware, Ohio, which the group affectionately calls "Mowhio."

Formed in 1992, the USLMRA is the oldest and largest lawn mower racing sanctioning body, with more than 600 members and 32 chapters and affiliates.
