Justice, USDA holding workshop to discuss competition and regulation

by James Marcher

This week, the Justice Department and the Department of Agriculture are hosting a meeting in Iowa in order to discuss competition and regulations in the industry

The workshop will be held on March 12 in the FFA Enrichment Center at Des Moines Area Community College, which is located in Ankeny, Iowa. This marks the first joint workshop between the departments regarding these issues.

"The goals of the workshops are to promote dialogue among interested parties and foster learning with respect to the appropriate legal and economic analyses of these issues, as well as to listen to and learn from parties with experience in the agriculture sector," a release from the Justice Department said.

A number of high-level government officials will be present for the workshop, including Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder.

Vilsack recently announced that the USDA is taking comments regarding a departmental program to help farmers deal with competition from imports. Meanwhile, North Dakota is trying to encourage exports of things like farm equipment through a model farm established in Ukraine.
